Jack: Chapter 1

In the beginning, God created the heavens and earth. Many years later, Jack Matthew Bruns arrived on that earth! The best day of our lives!
We went to my 40 week Drs appointment with high hopes that I'd had significantly more progress towards the arrival of our little man than the previous week. Much to my dismay, it was very limited. However, once again, my blood pressure was high and for the first time the Drs became concerned. (Frankly, I'd wondered why it hadn't been an issue the week before.) Anyway, after taking my blood pressure numerous times the Dr sent me home, told me to not get off the couch (well, actually she said out of bed unless necessary) all night and to come back in the morning to get my BP checked again. We had an appointment scheduled for the following Tuesday for another ultrasound because I was measuring big. Friday morning I got myself ready for work, hoping I wouldn't be going in and would either have to go home to remain on the couch or be sent to the hospital. The Dr told me to go to the hospital. Of course, I had to stop at Target on my way home because I'd procrastinated purchasing nursing bras and figured I'd pick up a few magazines while I was at it! A little Cosmo is always a great source of entertainment!
We arrived at the hospital around noon and got situated in a room. My nurse, Amy came in, got my saline IV started and finished checking me in. Two hours later...yes TWO HOURS LATER the Dr on call finally came in. (Side note: The Dr on call was one of the Drs I didn't particularly care for...) He came in and asked what I wanted to do. Umm...hello...I was told to come to L&D, I'm checked in, IVed, what do you mean what do I want to do? Lets get this baby out!!!! He'd asked about my BP being high at previous appointments and Dr. Ding-a-Ling didn't seem to remember that he saw me the previous week, when it was high and I had a bit of protein in my urine, and he wasn't concerned at all.
A few hours later (after we were able to eat "lunch") they came in to get the induction process started. A drug called Cervidal (I think ;)!) was inserted behind my cervix and I was told it stays in for 12 hours. This drug is supposed to help soften the cervix. Not long after I started having contractions. An hour later, I was having non-stop contractions. We'd called for our nurse to find out how "normal" this was. After witnessing back-to-back contractions she decided to check my progress. I'd dilated to 4 cm and she told me she'd call the anesthesiologist for my epidural. He showed up not long after she'd called and minutes after the Cervidal was taken out (my water broke during the process as well) and we had to work through contractions to get the epidural administered. Moments later, my legs were numb and I was thanking him for providing such sweet relief! I told him he was my favorite person of the day thus far! (I'm sure he hears that a lot!) An hour later I'd progressed to 8 cm and by the time things were set up in my room it was time to push. The next hour and a half was quite exhausting and at 10:27 I saw the sweet face I'd been imagining for the past 9 months! A little boy with a head full of dark hair, beautiful big blue eyes, and huge feet was placed on my chest for Mark and me to admire. And all the angels rejoiced!

D-Day

Today is July 29, Jack's due date, and I find myself sitting at work with a baby moving around in my belly watching the time crawl by! Mark and I are completely ready for our lives to be turned upside down and spun in circles with feedings, poopy diapers, spit up, a floor I'll never be able to keep clean again, coos, sweet heart-melting smiles, and everything else I don't realize is coming my way =)!

I think things are slowly progressing towards the arrival of our baby boy! I think! My back has been in a constant state of achiness, the Braxton-Hicks contractions are growing in frequency and strength, and then there's been the loss of the glamorous "plug"! Gross, I know, but I'm thinking there'll be a few things that top that in a matter of days! I've also become increasingly irritable, indecisive, and uncomfortable! Poor Mark has had to deal a roller coaster of crazies and emotions the past couple of weeks. Oh, and I shouldn't forget to mention the insanely itchy belly! I feel like a 5 year old with chicken pox that I shouldn't be scratching. Let me tell you, I've tried everything and nothing brings relief...even scratching until I draw blood. Oops! But, my stomach has never been so rock hard =)! HAH! And, Tylenol PM is the greatest thing since ice cream!

We're certainly becoming quite impatient waiting for Jack's appearance. I'm beginning to think I'm going to have another very stubborn Bruns boy on my hands! I just wish he'd realize how much more space he'd have to stretch and roll if he'd just come out!

Ready

I am SO ready to be done being pregnant! Its been a great ride, but, the tank is on "E", its time for an oil change, and I need new brakes. Literally, all true when it comes to my car - minus the gas thing...

Yes, I'm done. "Cankles" are setting in and sleeping is a crap-shoot. I'm tired, yet I can't sleep! I'm sure my body is just preparing itself for sleepless nights, but for those of you who've lived with me, know that I get very annoyed if I can't sleep! (The next 6 months will be very interesting! LOL!) Tylenol PM is on my grocery list this week!

And unbeknownst to me, I've been having Braxton-Hicks contractions for weeks. Elizabeth pointed them out to be when she was home...I just thought it was the baby pushing out! Who knew? Anyway, generally they've just been an annoyance that I've been able to deal with. Until yesterday when I was completely uncomfortable all day. I thought about leaving work, except that just because I'd be at home, doesn't mean I'd be comfortable. (I've spent many evenings changing positions every 2 minutes on the couch!) And last night, or shall I say early this morning, they were painful. I kept thinking, could this really be it? Needless to say, the seemingly 20 minute long contractions weren't "it". Jack is happy stretching and practicing his touchdown dance (which also kept me awake for hours this morning), and practicing breathing (he has the hiccups right now!) in his small little space! I'll try to enjoy it for however long it lasts...

Ready or Not...

Mark and I are officially ready to meet our baby boy! I finally sterilized a few bottles, nipples, and pacifiers and grew incredibly excited watching them dry on the drying rack! And my car is now baby ready as well! We installed the car seat base, mirror, and window shade! All I wanted was the base, but Daddy wanted to get it all done! And who am I to argue about getting things done ahead of time?

And now that everything is done, we're just waiting. Lots and lots of waiting. I can't help but think that every lower abdominal cramp or slight back pain is the start of a contraction. I even placed an extra crib mattress protector under the fitted sheet incase my water breaks! (Although it did come off last night because I dislike waking up in a puddle of sweat!) Other than these few glimmers of hope that I'll soon get to see Jack's little face (and hands, fingers, tooshie, and tootsies) I am surprisingly calm and relaxed about labor, delivery, and having a baby at home! Perhaps its because I've been praying for patience or perhaps its because I know everything from here on out is out of my control. Either way, this feeling of calmness and patience is new to me! Hopefully it lasts for a VERY LONG time especially when he leaves unwashable items in his pockets!

We are just so darn excited to have this little boy in our lives! Mark is ready to play - although I remind him it'll be months before "playing" happens! Luckily, Mark is really good with babies so I know even after a long day of school and football I'll be able to toss Jack in his arms without complaints! And really, honestly, as much as I've loved being pregnant, I'm done! I'm ready to have my body back to myself, be able to sleep in whatever position I want, not be weary of overdosing on Tums, enjoy some cheap wine :-), and not have the urge to tinkle every 30 minutes! I can't help but be naively optimistic that I'll be sleeping for longer stretches of time once Jack is finally here!

Here's my FYI for the day - store brand Tums, are disgusting. Yes, they might be 1/2 the price of Tums, however, when you're eating them every few hours, its worth it to not eat flavored chalk.

Overpacking

I'm overpacking for my child already! There are 5 outfits for potential wear! Depending on what "he feels like"! Hah! Well, I'm sure he's bound to pee or poo on 1, but seriously, 5? Well, to make myself sound better, 2 are outfits with matching caps for hospital pics (if we decide to do that) and 3 are potential coming homes - 2 onesies of different sizes and 1 little outfit, but it looks like it might be a struggle to put on! Its not like he's a Cabbage Patch Kid and I can contort his stuffing filled legs to fit into something!

Oh, and lets not forget about the diapers, wipes, and burp cloth I have packed for the 11 mile drive!

Twinkle Twinkle Little Star...

Hooray! We put the finishing touches on the nursery last night and we met with a Pediatrician we really like today!
I sure hope Jack like "Grover" & elephants!

And now, since the NBA draft is on, I'm off to pack my hospital bag!

Family Fun

The past two weekends Mark and I have been spending lots of time with our families. We went to Oglebay Golf Resort in Wheeling, WV with the Bruns' for a weekend of, well, mostly golf! Unfortunately the weather wasn't conducive for much sun time but once the rain disappeared the golfers were able to golf and Katie and I were able to take Maddie swimming for the first time. But brrr...the water was cold! We all did play a little put-put and I'm officially the worst golfer in the family!

Then we were in Columbus! Elizabeth & JB made their yearly trip to Ohio so there was lots of laughter, wining, chatting, belly rubs, and golf!

And, my best girlies hosted a baby shower! We got lots of fabulous necessities and Laurie & Dana outdid themselves!

All of the ladies & 1 little gentleman!
